Every day, two billion people face the exact same spot on Earth. That spot is the Kaaba — a building about as tall as a four-story house, sitting at the center of Makkah, in western Saudi Arabia. Makkah is home to the Masjid al-Haram, the largest mosque on Earth, built around it. Muslims face the Kaaba during all five daily prayers, wherever on the planet they're standing. Once a year, two to three million people travel there for Hajj — one of Islam's Five Pillars — and walk around the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise. It's the largest annual human gathering on Earth. Then there's Madinah, 210 miles north. In 622 CE, the Prophet Muhammad moved there, built the first mosque, and founded Islam's earliest community. That move was so important it marks Year One of the Islamic calendar. Makkah is the direction of prayer; Madinah is where it all began.
